What did Paul experience on the road to Damascus?

According to Acts 9:1-9, Saul of Tarsus (later called Paul) was travelling to Damascus with letters from the high priest authorising him to arrest followers of Jesus. As he neared the city, a sudden bright light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?" When Saul asked who was speaking, the voice replied, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting."

This encounter is best described as a vision of Christ. Paul saw the risen Jesus in a blinding light and heard His voice directly. The experience left Paul physically blind for three days until Ananias came and restored his sight. This event was the turning point that transformed Paul from a persecutor of Christians into the most prominent apostle to the Gentiles.
