When Jesus told the would-be disciple who wanted to bury his father to leave the dead to bury their own dead, he meant that

This episode is recorded in Luke 9:59-60 (and Matthew 8:21-22). A man expressed willingness to follow Jesus but asked permission to first go and bury his father. Jesus responded: "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Jesus' statement uses the word "dead" in two different senses within the same sentence. The first "dead" refers to the spiritually dead - those who have not responded to God's call and are spiritually lifeless. The second "dead" refers to the physically dead - the deceased father. Jesus was saying that those who are spiritually dead (who have not committed to following God) can attend to burial duties, while the man who had been called to discipleship should prioritise proclaiming the kingdom.

This was not an assurance of resurrection, nor did it mean the father had not actually died. While discipleship does require prioritising God's kingdom, the specific teaching of this statement is about the distinction between spiritual and physical death, and the urgency of the kingdom mission over earthly obligations.
