Joseph was already in Egypt, having been sold into slavery by his brothers and eventually rising to a position of power there. Thus, he was not included in the list of the sons of Jacob who migrated to Egypt with their families. However, Joseph's two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, were included in the list as heads of their own tribes.
