Write down the error interval for the true temperature, \(t\)°C. (2)

Answer Details

Rounding to the nearest whole degree means the true temperature lies within half a degree either side of the displayed reading.

\[ 26.5 \leq t \lt 27.5 \] [2 marks]

The lower bound, \(26.5\), is included because a temperature of exactly \(26.5^\circ\)C would round up to \(27^\circ\)C, while the upper bound, \(27.5\), is excluded because a temperature of exactly \(27.5^\circ\)C would round up to \(28^\circ\)C rather than down to \(27^\circ\)C.
