A community library arranges paperbacks on a set of new square display cubes so that the number of books placed on each shelf is \(\sqrt{n}\), where \(n\) is the total number of paperbacks currently on display this week. This week \(\sqrt{n} + 3 = 10\).
Work out the value of \(n\). (3)

To solve an equation containing a square root, first isolate the root on one side, then square both sides to remove it, since squaring is the inverse operation of taking a square root.
\(\sqrt n=10-3=7\) [1 mark]
