Work out the total volume of water needed to fill both pools, giving your answer in standard form. (4)
Answer Details
Adding two quantities given in standard form is most reliable by first converting each to an ordinary number (or matching their powers of \(10\)), adding, and then converting the total back into standard form.
\(4.8\times10^5=480\,000\) litres and \(9.6\times10^3=9\,600\) litres [2 marks]
\(480\,000+9\,600=489\,600\) litres [1 mark]
\(=4.896\times10^5\) litres [1 mark]
