Question 1 Report

Elmswood bus depot recorded the number of passengers carried by three routes last Saturday, shown in the table below. Each total happens to be a perfect square. The depot manager wants the square root of each total worked out by hand before the figures go into next month's report.

RoutePassengers
A324
B441
C576
  1. Work out \(\sqrt{324}\). (1)
  2. Work out \(\sqrt{441}\). (1)
  3. Work out \(\sqrt{576}\), and write down which route carried the most passengers. (2)

Answer Details

A square root undoes squaring, so finding \(\sqrt{324}\), \(\sqrt{441}\) and \(\sqrt{576}\) means finding the number that, when multiplied by itself, gives each total.

  1. (a) [1]. Since \(18^2 = 324\), \(\sqrt{324} = 18\).
  2. (b) [1]. Since \(21^2 = 441\), \(\sqrt{441} = 21\).
  3. (c) [2]. Since \(24^2 = 576\), \(\sqrt{576} = 24\). Comparing the original passenger totals directly, 576 is the largest of \(324\), \(441\) and \(576\), so Route C carried the most passengers.
