Question 1 Report
A fuel depot stores diesel in four tanks, A, B, C and D. The bar chart shows the amount of diesel, in litres, held in tanks A, B and C. Across all four tanks, the depot holds 6000 litres of diesel in total.
This question tests reading frequencies from a bar chart for three categories, using a stated grand total to find a missing fourth category, and simplifying a fraction of the total.
Part (a) [2] Reading the bars for tanks A, B and C gives \(1200, 1850\) and \(900\) litres, totalling \(1200+1850+900=3950\) litres. Since the depot holds \(6000\) litres in total across all four tanks, tank D holds \(6000-3950=2050\) litres.
Part (b) [2] Tank B's \(1850\) litres out of the \(6000\) litre total gives \(\frac{1850}{6000}\), which simplifies (dividing by 50) to \(\frac{37}{120}\).
Always simplify a fraction by the highest common factor you can spot; here \(1850\) and \(6000\) share a factor of \(50\), which reduces the fraction to \(\frac{37}{120}\) in one step rather than several smaller ones.
