Comparing four training distances and then combining two of them uses the same standard-form rules used throughout this topic.
- [1] Leo's figure, \(5.1\times10^3\), is the largest of the four squad members, so Leo ran the greatest distance.
- [2] Both figures share the power \(10^3\): \[3.8\times10^3 + 4.6\times10^3 = 8.4\times10^3\ (=8\,400 \text{ m}).\]
All four distances here share the power \(10^3\), so this question really tests whether the leading numbers can be compared and added correctly once the shared power of 10 is recognised.
