The graph shows a corner shop's daily ice cream sales alongside the midday temperature recorded each day for one week.

  1. Write down the day with the highest sales. (1)
  2. Find the difference in sales between Monday and Saturday. (2)
  3. Work out the mean daily sales for the week, giving your answer to 3 significant figures. (1)

Answer Details

A line graph lets you read a value for each day directly from the height of the point plotted; a difference between two days is found by subtracting the smaller reading from the larger, and a mean is the total of all readings divided by how many there are.

  1. Reading the sales values from the graph across the week:
    DayMonTueWedThuFriSatSun
    Sales12152835405245
The highest point on the graph is on Saturday, so this is the day with the highest sales. [1]
  2. Monday's sales were \(12\) and Saturday's were \(52\): \[52 - 12 = 40\] [2]
  3. Adding all seven daily readings and dividing by \(7\): \[(12 + 15 + 28 + 35 + 40 + 52 + 45) \div 7 = 227 \div 7 = 32.428... \approx 32.4 \text{ (3 s.f.)}\] [1]

A mean uses every value in the data set, not just the highest and lowest; add all seven readings before dividing, and round only at the final step so the stated degree of accuracy is not lost early.
