Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows the double circulation of blood in a human. A student has drawn arrows between the heart, lungs and body cells, but has left two boxes blank.
(a) Complete box A with the name of the blood vessel that carries blood from the lungs to the heart. [1]
(b) Complete box B with the name of the blood vessel that carries blood from body cells to the heart. [1]
(c) State whether blood in the pulmonary vein has a high or low oxygen concentration. [1]
(d) Explain why the pulmonary artery is unusual when compared with most arteries. [2]
(e) Describe the advantage of double circulation to a human. [3]
(a) Box A is the pulmonary vein. [1] Despite being a vein, it carries oxygenated blood because it returns blood from the lungs to the heart.
(b) Box B is the vena cava. [1]
(c) Blood in the pulmonary vein has a high oxygen concentration. [1]
(d) The pulmonary artery is an artery because it carries blood away from the heart. Unlike most arteries, it carries deoxygenated, low-oxygen blood to the lungs. [2]
(e) In double circulation, blood is pumped to the lungs and then pumped again to the body. The second pump allows blood to leave the heart for the body at high pressure, giving rapid delivery of oxygen and glucose to body cells. [3]
