Question 1 Report
Fig. 1 shows a student’s model cell made from dialysis tubing. The tubing contains 10% sugar solution and is placed in a beaker containing 2% sugar solution. The membrane allows water molecules to pass but not sugar molecules. The student records that the model cell has a greater mass after 30 minutes.
(a) Name the process responsible for the net movement of water into the model cell. [1]
(b) Describe the net movement of water molecules shown in Fig. 1. [2]
(c) Explain why the mass of the model cell increases. [3]
(a) The net movement of water into the model cell is osmosis. [1 mark]
(b) Water moves from the 2% sugar solution, where water concentration is higher, into the tubing containing 10% sugar solution, where water concentration is lower. [2 marks]
(c) The dialysis tubing is partially permeable. Water molecules can cross it, but sugar molecules cannot. Therefore, there is a net movement of water into the more concentrated sugar solution in the tubing, increasing the model cell's mass. [3 marks]
