When the sun is directly overhead at the tropic of Capricorn on 22nd December, the Northern Hemisphere experiences its winter solstice. The winter solstice is the day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year. This occurs because the North Pole is tilted furthest away from the sun on this day. As a result, the sunlight falls at a very oblique angle on the Northern Hemisphere causing less energy to be received in the region, leading to a decrease in temperature.
