Question 1 Report

The joystick typically have a button on _________ used to select the option pointed by the cursor.

Answer Details

A joystick is an input device with a movable stick used mainly for controlling direction or position, most commonly in games and simulations. To let the user make a selection or trigger an action without letting go of the stick, joysticks are fitted with one or more buttons positioned on top of the stick, within easy reach of the thumb while the hand still grips and moves the stick.

Placing the button on top means the user can move the joystick with their fingers wrapped around it and press the button with their thumb at the same time, allowing quick selection of whatever the cursor is currently pointing at without needing a second hand or interrupting the movement of the stick.

A button on the bottom, left, or right side of the stick would be awkward to reach while still gripping and steering the stick, so manufacturers place the primary select button on top for ergonomic, one-handed operation.

Exam tip: remember that a joystick's design goal is single-handed control, so its main action button sits on top, where the thumb naturally rests.
