In file management, individual files (documents, images, spreadsheets, and so on) are stored inside a container that groups related files together so they can be organised and found easily. This container is called a folder, sometimes also referred to as a directory.

Just as a physical filing cabinet holds many paper folders, each containing several documents, a computer's storage holds many digital folders, each capable of containing numerous files. Grouping many files under one folder name makes it possible to move, copy, or delete an entire set of related files at once, rather than handling each file individually.
