Computer networks are classified by the geographical area they cover, ranging from a single person's immediate space to an entire continent.

A Personal Area Network connects devices that are within a very short range of a single user, typically a few metres, such as a phone linked to a wireless headset or a laptop connected to a smartwatch via Bluetooth. Because it covers the smallest possible area and often links just two or a few devices belonging to one person, it is considered the most basic and smallest type of network.

A Storage Area Network is a specialised network dedicated to connecting storage devices to servers, which makes it more complex in purpose than a basic personal network, even though it is also relatively small in physical scale.
