What is the major purpose of application software?

Application software is a category of programs designed to let a user carry out specific, real-world tasks, in contrast to system software, which exists to manage and oversee the computer's own hardware and resources.

Overseeing the running of the computer is the job of the operating system, a form of system software, not application software.
