What does LAN stand for?

A computer network is classified partly by the geographical area it covers. When a set of computers, printers, and other devices are connected together within one building or a group of buildings close to each other, such as a school, office, or home, the network is described as covering a small, "local" area.

Local area network is the term that describes exactly this kind of setup: devices linked over a small, confined space, usually managed and owned by a single organisation, and typically using cables or Wi-Fi rather than a third-party carrier.
