What type of printer uses toner to print documents?

Printers are classified partly by the material they use to put marks on paper. Inkjet printers spray liquid ink through tiny nozzles, dot matrix printers strike an inked ribbon with pins, and thermal printers use heat on specially coated paper. None of these three uses a fine powder to form the printed image.

A laser jet printer instead uses toner, a fine powder made of pigment and plastic particles. Inside the printer, a laser charges a rotating drum in the pattern of the image, the charged areas attract toner powder, and the powder is then transferred onto the paper and fused permanently in place using heat and pressure. This is why the toner cartridge, not an ink cartridge, is the consumable associated with laser printing.

A quick way to tell printer types apart on paper: if the question mentions toner and a heated fusing process, it is describing a laser jet printer, whereas liquid ink points to an inkjet printer instead.
