The memory unit of a computer stores data and instructions temporarily or permanently for processing. To understand where it gets this data from, it helps to recall the basic data flow inside a computer: data first enters the system, then gets stored, then gets processed, and finally leaves the system as output.

Data and instructions enter the computer through the input unit, using devices such as a keyboard, mouse, or scanner. The output unit only displays or produces results after processing, so it does not feed memory; instead, it receives finished results from memory or the processor. The control unit directs and coordinates operations rather than supplying raw data, and the arithmetic and logic unit performs calculations and comparisons on data already in memory, rather than being the point of entry for new data.
