The processes by which animals release carbon dioxide into the air are respiration and decay. Respiration is the process by which animals take in oxygen and release carbon dioxide as a waste product. This process occurs continuously in animals as they use oxygen to release energy from the food they consume. As a result, carbon dioxide is released into the air as a byproduct. Decay, on the other hand, is the process by which dead organic matter breaks down and decomposes. During this process, microorganisms break down the organic matter and release carbon dioxide as a byproduct. This carbon dioxide is then released into the air.
