(b) Characteristics of two relief features

1. Continental shelf

It is the shallow, gently sloping submerged margin of a continent, extending from the coast to the shelf break.
It is a continuation of the land beneath the sea and commonly has a very gentle gradient of about 1 in 500.
It is generally less than 200 m deep and occupies about 7% of the total ocean area.
It is rich in fish and is an important area for offshore petroleum exploitation and recreation.

2. Continental slope

It is the relatively steep part of the ocean floor that descends from the outer edge of the continental shelf to the deep-sea plain.
It commonly extends through depths of about 1,800 m to 5,400 m.
It lies close to the continent and forms the boundary between the continental margin and the deep ocean basin.
It may be cut by submarine canyons and is usually much steeper than the continental shelf.
