When we inhale, air enters through the nostrils and travels down the throat and into the trachea, which is also known as the windpipe. The trachea then splits into two bronchi, one for each lung. The bronchi further divide into smaller bronchioles, which continue to branch into even smaller tubes. Eventually, the bronchioles lead to tiny air sacs called alveoli, which are the site of gas exchange.
When we breathe in, oxygen from the air is diffused into the blood vessels surrounding the alveoli, while carbon dioxide from the blood is diffused into the alveoli to be exhaled out of the body. This process is called respiration and is necessary for the body to receive oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide.
