The game of volleyball was invented by William Morgan. He was a physical education instructor at the YMCA (Young Men's Christian Association) in Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA. He created the game in 1895 as a way to combine elements of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball into a new sport that could be played indoors. The game originally had different names such as "Mintonette" and "Volley Ball" before settling on its current name.
