(a) Military defeats of Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire in 1918 [4 marks]
Bulgaria was defeated by Allied forces (including French, British, Serbian, and Greek troops) at the Battle of Dobro Pole in Macedonia in September 1918. Bulgaria signed an armistice on 29 September 1918, becoming the first of the Central Powers to surrender. The Ottoman Empire was defeated by British forces under General Allenby at the Battle of Megiddo in Palestine in September 1918, which shattered Ottoman military resistance in the region. The Ottoman Empire signed the Armistice of Mudros on 30 October 1918.
(b) Why Austria-Hungary sought a separate peace in October 1918 [6 marks]
(c) To what extent was the collapse of Germany's allies responsible for the armistice request? [10 marks]
The collapse of Germany's allies was a significant factor because it left Germany strategically isolated and militarily exposed on multiple fronts. Bulgaria's surrender on 29 September opened a route for Allied forces to advance northward towards Austria-Hungary and potentially into Germany from the south-east. The Ottoman Empire's defeat freed Allied resources and removed any remaining Central Powers presence in the Middle East. Austria-Hungary's disintegration removed Germany's most important military partner and exposed its southern border.
However, Germany's own military and domestic situation was already deteriorating independently of its allies' collapses. The Spring Offensive had failed by July 1918, exhausting Germany's reserves. The Allied Hundred Days Offensive from August was driving German forces back steadily on the Western Front. The Allied naval blockade had weakened the home front over years. Internal revolution, beginning with the Kiel mutiny in late October, was undermining the government's authority. American troops were arriving in ever-increasing numbers.
The collapse of the allies accelerated Germany's decision to seek an armistice by removing any remaining strategic options and confirming that the war was irretrievably lost. However, Germany was already losing the war on its own terms before its allies collapsed. The allied defeats and Germany's own military, economic, and political crises reinforced each other, creating a combined pressure that made the armistice inevitable.
