Answer Details

Part (a) - The fighting at Iwo Jima and Okinawa [4 marks]

  • Iwo Jima (February-March 1945): US Marines fought for 36 days to capture a small, heavily fortified volcanic island. The 21,000 Japanese defenders had constructed elaborate underground tunnels and bunkers. Nearly all the Japanese garrison was killed; American casualties exceeded 26,000, including nearly 7,000 dead.
  • Okinawa (April-June 1945): Over 180,000 American troops fought a three-month battle against approximately 100,000 Japanese defenders. The battle cost approximately 12,000 American and 110,000 Japanese military dead. Tens of thousands of Okinawan civilians also perished, many caught in the crossfire or pressured into suicide by Japanese propaganda.

Part (b) - Why the island-hopping strategy proved costly for both sides [6 marks]

  • Japanese determination: Japanese defenders fought with extreme determination, following a code that regarded surrender as dishonourable. Most garrisons fought to the last man.
  • Elaborate defences: Japanese forces constructed underground bunkers, tunnels and cave systems that were extremely difficult to destroy with conventional bombardment.
  • Kamikaze attacks: From 1944, Japanese pilots flew suicide missions (kamikaze) against Allied naval vessels, sinking or damaging hundreds of ships and inflicting heavy casualties on crews.
  • Long supply lines: The vast distances of the Pacific required large naval task forces and extended supply chains to support each operation.
  • Tropical disease: Malaria, dengue fever and other tropical illnesses added significantly to casualties on both sides.
  • No quick victories: Each island had to be taken by direct assault because Japanese garrisons could not be starved into submission quickly enough, and Japanese soldiers rarely surrendered.

Part (c) - How important was the island-hopping campaign in bringing about Japan's defeat? [10 marks]

Importance of island-hopping:

  • It gradually pushed Japanese forces back towards the home islands, capturing key bases for air and naval operations at each step.
  • The capture of the Mariana Islands (1944) provided bases for B-29 bombers to conduct the strategic bombing campaign against Japanese cities.
  • Iwo Jima provided an emergency landing strip for damaged bombers returning from Japan and a base for fighter escorts.
  • Okinawa was intended as a staging area for the planned invasion of Japan itself (Operation Downfall).
  • The campaign destroyed much of Japan's remaining naval and air power through a series of devastating engagements.

Other factors in Japan's defeat:

  • The submarine campaign devastated Japanese merchant shipping, cutting off supplies of oil, food and raw materials.
  • The strategic bombing campaign, including the firebombing of Tokyo (March 1945), destroyed Japanese cities and industry.
  • The atomic bombs on Hiroshima (6 August 1945) and Nagasaki (9 August 1945) inflicted unprecedented destruction.
  • The Soviet declaration of war on 8 August 1945 and rapid invasion of Manchuria eliminated Japan's last diplomatic hopes.

The island-hopping campaign was essential in bringing American forces within striking distance of Japan, but it was the combination of multiple pressures - naval blockade, strategic bombing, atomic weapons and Soviet entry - that finally compelled Japan's surrender on 15 August 1945.
