Answer Details

Part (a) - The destruction caused by the atomic bombs [4 marks]

  • The bomb dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 (a uranium bomb, code-named 'Little Boy') killed approximately 80,000 people instantly, with the total death toll rising to around 140,000 by the end of 1945.
  • The bomb dropped on Nagasaki on 9 August 1945 (a plutonium bomb, code-named 'Fat Man') killed approximately 40,000 people instantly, eventually rising to around 70,000.
  • Both cities were largely destroyed by the combination of blast wave, firestorm and radiation.
  • Survivors (hibakusha) suffered long-term health effects including radiation sickness, burns, leukaemia and increased cancer rates lasting for decades.

Part (b) - Why President Truman decided to use atomic weapons against Japan [6 marks]

  • Avoiding invasion casualties: Military estimates suggested that a conventional invasion of the Japanese home islands (Operation Downfall) could cost hundreds of thousands of American casualties, based on the fierce resistance encountered at Iwo Jima and Okinawa.
  • Japanese refusal to surrender: Despite devastating military losses, Japan's military leadership refused to accept unconditional surrender. The experience of Okinawa showed Japanese soldiers and civilians would fight to the death.
  • Ending the war quickly: Truman wanted to end the war as rapidly as possible, both to save American lives and to prevent further suffering.
  • The Soviet factor: Truman also wanted to end the war before the Soviet Union could advance into Manchuria and claim a significant role in the post-war settlement of Japan and East Asia.
  • Political and financial pressure: The Manhattan Project had cost approximately $2 billion. There was political pressure to demonstrate results from this enormous investment.
  • Demonstration of power: Some advisers saw the bomb as a way to demonstrate American military power to the Soviet Union, establishing an advantage in the emerging post-war rivalry.

Part (c) - How far were the atomic bombs responsible for Japan's surrender? [10 marks]

The case for the bombs being decisive:

  • The bombs provided Emperor Hirohito with a justification to overrule the military leaders who wanted to continue fighting. In his surrender broadcast on 15 August 1945, he cited the 'new and most cruel bomb' as a reason for ending the war.
  • The unprecedented scale of destruction - entire cities destroyed by a single weapon - shocked Japanese leaders in a way that conventional bombing had not.

Other factors in Japan's surrender:

  • The Soviet declaration of war on Japan (8 August 1945) and the rapid Soviet invasion of Manchuria were equally shocking. This eliminated any hope of using the Soviet Union as a mediator for a negotiated peace.
  • Japan's military situation was already desperate: its navy was destroyed, its cities were being firebombed, its industry was crippled, and a naval blockade was causing severe food shortages.
  • Some historians argue Japan would have surrendered without the atomic bombs, given the combination of conventional bombing, blockade and Soviet entry.

Historical debate:

  • The debate over whether the bombs were necessary remains one of the most contested questions of the twentieth century.
  • The most balanced assessment is that the bombs were one of several converging pressures - alongside Soviet entry, naval blockade and conventional bombing - that together made surrender unavoidable. The bombs accelerated a process that was already under way, but they provided the political cover for the Emperor to end the war.
