Fig. 1.1 shows a simple a.c. generator.
What type of current does this generator produce?
A generator with slip rings produces alternating current (a.c.). The slip rings provide a continuous connection between the rotating coil and the external circuit without reversing the connections. As the coil rotates, the direction of the induced e.m.f. reverses every half turn, producing a current that alternates in direction.
If the generator used a split-ring commutator instead of slip rings, the output would be direct current (d.c.), because the commutator reverses the external connections every half turn, keeping the current flowing in one direction.
