Fig. 1.22 shows the electric field lines around a positive point charge. Three points A, B and C are marked at different distances from the charge.
At which point is the electric field strength greatest?
The electric field strength around a point charge decreases with distance from the charge. Point A is closest to the central positive charge, so the electric field strength is greatest at A.
The field lines are closest together near point A, confirming the strongest field there. At point B (further away) the lines are more spread out and the field is weaker. At point C (furthest away) the lines are most spread out and the field is weakest. For a point charge, the field strength follows an inverse-square law: it decreases with the square of the distance.
