Question 1 Report
Two identical springs P and Q hang from a support. Spring P has a 3.0 N load attached and an extension of 6.0 cm. Spring Q has a 6.0 N load attached.
What is the extension of spring Q?
Since the springs are identical, they have the same spring constant. From spring P:
\[ k = \frac{F}{x} = \frac{3.0}{6.0} = 0.50 \text{ N/cm} \]For spring Q with a 6.0 N load:
\[ x = \frac{F}{k} = \frac{6.0}{0.50} = 12 \text{ cm} \]The extension of spring Q is 12 cm. Since the load is doubled compared to P, and the spring obeys Hooke's law, the extension also doubles from 6.0 cm to 12 cm.
