Question 1 Report
Fig. 1.1 shows white light being dispersed by a glass prism. A spectrum is formed on a screen. A piece of photographic film is placed at position Y, just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum.
The photographic film at position Y becomes exposed. What type of radiation is causing this?
The photographic film at position Y, just beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum, is exposed by ultraviolet radiation. When white light is dispersed by a prism, the visible spectrum extends from red to violet. Beyond the violet end lies ultraviolet, which is invisible to the eye but has enough energy to cause chemical changes in photographic film.
Although ultraviolet is not visible, it is still present in the white light from the source and is refracted more than violet light by the prism, directing it to position Y beyond the visible violet.
