Question 1 Report
The female reproductive system produces egg cells and provides the place where a fertilised egg can develop into a fetus during pregnancy. Fig. 3.1 shows the human female reproductive system as it would appear when viewed from the front of the body, with several of its parts labelled with letters. The diagram includes the structures in which the egg cells are made, the tubes along which the eggs travel after they are released and the organ in which a fetus grows and is protected until it is ready to be born.
Study Fig. 3.1 carefully and use your knowledge of the female reproductive system to answer the questions that follow.
(a) Using Fig. 3.1, name the structures labelled P and R. [2]
(b) State the part in which egg cells are produced. [1]
(c) State the part in which fertilisation normally takes place. [1]
(d) Describe how an egg is moved along the oviduct towards the uterus. [2]
(e) State one function of the cervix during pregnancy. [1]
This question tests the parts of the female reproductive system and where key events happen.
(a) Structures P and R [2] P = ovary (where egg cells are made) and R = uterus (where a fetus develops). 1 mark each.
(b) Where egg cells are produced [1] The ovary.
(c) Where fertilisation normally takes place [1] The oviduct (fallopian tube), not the uterus - the sperm meets and fertilises the egg as it travels down the oviduct.
(d) How the egg is moved along the oviduct [2] Ciliated cells lining the oviduct beat/waft the egg along; and the muscular wall contracts (peristalsis) to push it towards the uterus.
(e) Function of the cervix during pregnancy [1] It stays closed / forms a mucus plug that holds the fetus in and keeps pathogens out.
