The diagram shows a small part of the periodic table with the group numbers written above the columns. Element E is shaded. Use its position in the diagram to state which group element E belongs to.
Groups are the vertical columns of the periodic table, and the group number is read from the heading directly above the column an element occupies. The shaded box holding element E lies in the column headed VI, so element E is in Group VI. Elements there have 6 electrons in their outer shell and typically form 2- ions, as oxygen and sulfur do.
Group VII is the next column to the right and Group IV lies further to the left, so both come from counting the columns from the wrong end or by one place. Group 0 is the final column of noble gases at the far right, which is not where E is shaded.
