Answer Details

Part (a) - The fighting in the city of Stalingrad [4 marks]

  • The battle involved intense urban warfare, with German and Soviet forces fighting street by street and building by building in the ruins of the city.
  • Soviet defenders used destroyed factories (such as the Barrikady and Red October factories) and apartment blocks as strongpoints, making German tanks and aircraft less effective in the rubble-filled streets.
  • Snipers played a prominent role on both sides. Vasily Zaitsev became a celebrated Soviet marksman, symbolising the tenacity of the defence.
  • The city was largely destroyed by German bombing and artillery fire. Positions frequently changed hands multiple times, with the front line sometimes running through the middle of a single building.

Part (b) - Why the German Sixth Army was unable to capture Stalingrad [6 marks]

  • Soviet determination: Under Stalin's Order No. 227 ('Not one step back'), defenders fought with extraordinary resolve, knowing the city bore Stalin's name and its fall would be a propaganda disaster.
  • Terrain favoured the defenders: Paradoxically, the rubble created by German bombing provided cover for Soviet soldiers and neutralised German superiority in tanks and mobile warfare.
  • Continuous reinforcement: Soviet troops and supplies were ferried across the Volga River, maintaining the defence despite enormous losses.
  • Operation Uranus (November 1942): The Soviet counter-offensive broke through weaker Romanian and Italian forces protecting the German flanks, encircling the entire Sixth Army in Stalingrad.
  • Hitler's refusal to retreat: Hitler ordered Field Marshal Paulus to hold Stalingrad at all costs, forbidding any attempt at a breakout while escape was still possible.
  • Failed resupply and relief: Goering's Luftwaffe failed to supply the trapped army by air (delivering only a fraction of the required supplies), and Field Marshal Manstein's relief attempt (Operation Winter Storm) in December 1942 was halted by Soviet forces.

Part (c) - How important was the Battle of Stalingrad in determining the outcome of the war in Europe? [10 marks]

Stalingrad's importance:

  • The destruction of the German Sixth Army - approximately 91,000 soldiers surrendered in February 1943, and total Axis losses exceeded 800,000 - was the first major German defeat on the Eastern Front.
  • It shattered the myth of Wehrmacht invincibility and marked the strategic turning point after which Germany was permanently on the defensive in the east.
  • The battle enormously boosted Soviet morale and demoralised Germany, where three days of national mourning were declared.
  • It demonstrated that the Red Army could defeat a major German formation in a set-piece battle, building confidence for future offensives.

Other factors in Germany's defeat:

  • The Battle of Kursk (July 1943) confirmed the shift in the strategic balance on the Eastern Front.
  • Allied operations in North Africa, Italy and Normandy opened additional fronts that stretched German resources.
  • The Battle of the Atlantic and strategic bombing weakened Germany's war economy and supply lines.

Stalingrad was the psychological and strategic turning point on the Eastern Front - the moment when the initiative passed irreversibly to the Soviet Union. However, victory required more than two further years of intense fighting and the combined efforts of all the Allied powers.
