Question 1 Report

Fig. 14 shows a circuit board being soldered. The joining method has been selected for its strength and suitability for the materials being used. The joint must be strong enough to withstand the forces applied during use. Different joining methods are suitable for different materials and applications.

The top is flat. The blade is thin and sharp. It stays cool in the heat.

It is made from MDF. The plywood has a smooth finish.

When working with aluminium, appropriate safety precautions must be followed. The finished product is expected to have a working life of several years.

Answer Details

(a) Name the tool labelled A and the material labelled B [2]

  1. A - Soldering iron [1]. This is an electrically heated tool with a pointed copper tip (called the bit). It is used to transfer heat to the joint area on the PCB, melting the solder so it flows around the component lead and copper track.
  2. B - Solder [1]. Solder is a low-melting-point alloy (traditionally a tin-lead mixture, now often lead-free tin-copper or tin-silver-copper) supplied as wire. When melted by the soldering iron, it flows into the joint by capillary action and solidifies to form a permanent electrical and mechanical connection between the component lead and the copper track on the PCB.
