Question 1 Report

Fig. 10 shows a racing bicycle frame made from a modern material. The item shown is commonly used in design and technology projects. It has been designed and manufactured to meet specific requirements. The choice of materials and construction methods affects the quality of the finished product.

It is made in a shop. It is made to last. All the bits are smooth. It can be used on its own.

(a) Name the modern material used to make the bicycle frame. [1]

(b) Explain two advantages of using this material for the bicycle frame instead of steel. [2]

(c) Name one alternative material that could be used to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing. [1]

Answer Details

(a) The modern material used to make the bicycle frame is carbon fibre, also known as carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) [1]. It is classified as a modern material because it was developed through advanced manufacturing processes and offers properties that traditional materials cannot match.

(b) Two advantages of carbon fibre over steel for the bicycle frame:

  1. Carbon fibre has a high strength-to-weight ratio, so the frame is significantly lighter than a steel equivalent while maintaining the necessary strength [1]. A lighter frame allows the cyclist to accelerate faster and climb hills more easily, which is critical for racing performance.
  2. Carbon fibre does not corrode or rust, unlike steel which requires a protective coating to resist oxidation [1]. This means the frame lasts longer without deterioration and does not need repainting or rust treatment, reducing maintenance.

Carbon fibre can also be moulded into complex aerodynamic shapes more easily than steel, which is another valid advantage.

(c) One alternative material that could reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing is bamboo (or FSC-certified sustainable timber) [1]. Bamboo is a rapidly renewable natural resource that grows quickly without the need for intensive farming, has a lower carbon footprint than manufacturing carbon fibre, and is biodegradable at end of life. Recycled aluminium is also acceptable, as using recycled metal avoids the high energy cost of extracting and refining new ore.
