Fig. 16 shows two personal protective equipment (PPE) items found in a workshop. The item shown is commonly used in design and technology projects. It has been designed and manufactured to meet specific requirements. The choice of materials and construction methods affects the quality of the finished product.

Using a pillar drill (or any activity involving loud machinery such as a lathe, planer/thicknesser, circular saw, belt sander, or angle grinder). These machines generate sustained high noise levels that can cause permanent hearing damage with prolonged exposure. Ear defenders reduce the noise reaching the ear to a safe level, typically by 20-30 dB.
