Question 1 Report

Fig. 1 shows a product. It is made to last. The parts fit well. It is safe to use. The shape is good. It does its job well. All the bits are smooth. It can be used a lot. The base keeps it still. It can hold a lot of weight.

(a) It keeps its shape well over time. Name one item of personal protective equipment (PPE) the worker should wear when using the pillar drill. State one reason why the acrylic should be clamped to the drill table. [2]
(b) Pine is a popular choice for this application due to its corrosion resistance and ease of bending. Consideration has been given to the environmental impact of the materials and processes used. (a) Name the item of PPE shown in Fig. 19. (b) State one workshop activity where this item must be worn. [2]
(c) State two safe working practices the student should follow when using the wood chisel. Describe one reason why a risk assessment should be carried out before using the chisel. [3]
(d) The aluminium used gives the product good hardness and impact resistance. Consideration has been given to the environmental impact of the materials and processes used. Give two safety rules that must be followed when using the pillar drill shown in Fig. 20. [2]
(e) State two items of PPE that should be worn when using epoxy resin adhesive. Explain why the workshop should have good ventilation when using epoxy resin adhesive. State what COSHH stands for. [16]

Answer Details

(a) The worker should wear safety goggles (eye protection) [1] when using the pillar drill, because the drilling process produces hot swarf, chips, and fragments of acrylic that could fly into the eyes and cause injury. The acrylic workpiece should be clamped securely to the drill table [1] because acrylic is a smooth, rigid polymer and if held by hand, the rotating drill bit could grab and spin the material violently, risking injury to the operator.

(b) The item of PPE shown is safety goggles (eye protection) [1]. They must be worn during activities such as drilling, grinding, soldering, sawing, or using a lathe [1], where flying debris, sparks, or particles could enter the eyes.

(c) Two safe working practices when using a wood chisel:

  • Always cut away from the body [1] - directing the chisel blade away from the user reduces the risk of injury if the chisel slips.
  • Secure the workpiece in a vice or with a clamp [1] - this prevents the wood from moving during chiselling, giving better control and reducing the chance of the blade slipping.

A risk assessment should be carried out before using the chisel because it identifies potential hazards (such as sharp edges, flying splinters, or unstable workholding) and determines control measures to minimise the risk of injury to the user and others nearby [1].

(d) Two safety rules for the pillar drill:

  1. Keep the guard in place over the rotating chuck and drill bit to prevent accidental contact [1].
  2. Tie back loose hair and avoid loose clothing to prevent entanglement with the rotating parts [1].

Other valid rules include: clamp the workpiece securely, wear safety goggles, do not hold the workpiece by hand, and ensure the correct drill bit is fitted.

(e) This part combines several safety topics:

PPE for epoxy resin adhesive [2]: Disposable gloves protect the skin from irritation and sensitisation caused by direct contact with the resin or hardener. Safety goggles prevent splashes of uncured epoxy from reaching the eyes, where they could cause chemical burns. An apron is also acceptable.

Ventilation when using epoxy resin: Epoxy resin releases harmful fumes and vapours during mixing and curing. Good ventilation circulates fresh air through the workspace, removing these vapours and maintaining safe air quality to prevent dizziness, headaches, and respiratory irritation.

COSHH stands for Control of Substances Hazardous to Health [1]. These regulations require that the risks from hazardous substances such as epoxy resin are assessed and controlled to protect the health of users.
