When drilling acrylic on a pillar drill, small chips and shards of material are thrown upward and outward by the rotating drill bit. These sharp fragments can cause serious eye injury. Safety goggles form a seal around the eyes, preventing debris from entering from any direction. Other acceptable PPE includes a dust mask (acrylic dust can be an irritant) or an apron (to protect clothing).
