Efua Sutherland's The Marriage of Anansewa is set primarily in and around Ananse's home and its surroundings. The domestic setting is central to the play's action: Ananse hatches his scheme to auction his daughter Anansewa's hand in marriage to the highest-bidding chief from within his own compound. Messengers arrive and depart from this location, family discussions take place there, and the climactic feigned-death plot unfolds in the same domestic space.
