Anaerobic Respiration Continued

Overview

When you finish a hard sprint you do not stop panting straight away. Your heart pounds and your breathing stays fast and deep for a while. This is your body paying back the oxygen debt it built up while your muscles were respiring without enough oxygen.

In this lesson you will follow exactly how the body removes the oxygen debt after vigorous exercise: how the lactic acid travels from the muscles to the liver, why breathing and heart rate stay high, and how the lactic acid is finally broken down. This is an extended-tier topic worth knowing step by step.

Objectives

  1. [Supplement] Outline how the oxygen debt is removed after exercise, limited to: (a) continuation of fast heart rate to transport lactic acid in the blood from the muscles to the liver (b) continuation of deeper and faster breathing to supply oxygen for aerobic respiration of lactic acid (c) aerobic respiration of lactic acid in the liver

Lesson Note

During vigorous exercise muscles respire anaerobically and produce lactic acid, creating an oxygen debt. The body must remove this lactic acid afterwards, and the way it does so explains the panting and racing heart you feel after exercise. This is a favourite extended-tier exam topic because it links respiration, circulation and the liver.
