Movement And Position

Overview

How fast is it going? Is it speeding up or slowing down? How far will it travel? These are the questions that launched physics as a science, and they are still the ones you will answer most often in your Edexcel exam. This topic gives you the language and the equations to describe any straight-line motion precisely.

You will learn to read and draw distance-time and velocity-time graphs, calculate speed and acceleration from first principles, and use the key equations - including the powerful relationship between final speed, initial speed, acceleration and distance. Every worked example uses the method examiners reward: state the equation, substitute, solve, and check units.

Objectives

  1. Plot and explain distance-time graphs
  2. Know and use the relationship between average speed, distance moved and time taken: average speed = distance moved / time taken
  3. Investigate the motion of everyday objects such as toy cars or tennis balls
  4. Know and use the relationship between acceleration, change in velocity and time taken: acceleration = change in velocity / time taken, a = (v - u) / t
  5. Plot and explain velocity-time graphs
  6. Determine acceleration from the gradient of a velocity-time graph
  7. Determine the distance travelled from the area between a velocity-time graph and the time axis
  8. Use the relationship between final speed, initial speed, acceleration and distance moved: v2 = u2 + (2 x a x s)
