Angles

Overview

Angles are the grammar of geometry: a handful of simple rules let you find an unknown angle in almost any figure, from a single straight line to a many-sided polygon. The skill is choosing the right rule and explaining your reasoning.

In this lesson you will calculate unknown angles using the properties of points, lines, triangles and quadrilaterals, the angles formed when a line crosses parallel lines, and the angle properties of polygons.

Objectives

  1. Calculate unknown angles and give simple explanations using the following geometrical properties: sum of angles at a point = 360° sum of angles at a point on a straight line = 180° vertically opposite angles are equal angle sum of a triangle = 180° and angle sum of a quadrilateral = 360°.
  2. Calculate unknown angles and give geometric explanations for angles formed within parallel lines: corresponding angles are equal alternate angles are equal co-interior angles sum to 180° (supplementary).
  3. Know and use angle properties of regular polygons.
  4. Know and use angle properties of regular and irregular polygons. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

Angle reasoning appears throughout geometry, trigonometry and construction. Knowing the basic facts and giving a clear reason for each step is exactly what earns the marks.
