Two-Dimensional Cross Sections Of Three-Dimensional Objects

Overview

Slice through a solid and the flat shape you reveal is its cross section. Spin a flat shape around an axis and you sweep out a solid. These two ideas link two-dimensional shapes and three-dimensional objects in both directions.

In this lesson you will identify the two-dimensional cross sections of three-dimensional objects, and the solids generated by rotating two-dimensional shapes about an axis.

Objectives

  1. Identify the two-dimensional cross sections of three-dimensional objects and the solids generated by rotating two-dimensional shapes.

Lesson Note

Cross sections and solids of revolution connect flat shapes to solid objects, the foundation of engineering drawing, manufacturing and the way lathes and 3D models are designed.
