Similarity

Overview

Two shapes are similar when one is an exact enlargement of the other: same shape, different size. That single relationship lets you find missing lengths in maps, models and photographs, and (at Extended) connect the areas and volumes of similar figures.

In this lesson you will calculate lengths in similar shapes using the scale factor, and (at Extended) use the relationships between the lengths, areas and volumes of similar figures to solve problems.

Objectives

  1. Calculate lengths of similar shapes.
  2. Use the relationships between lengths and areas of similar shapes and lengths, surface areas and volumes of similar solids. (Extended only)
  3. Solve problems and give simple explanations involving similarity. (Extended only)

Lesson Note

Similarity is how we scale things reliably: a model car, a photograph, a map. Knowing that corresponding sides keep the same ratio turns an awkward measurement into a quick calculation.
