Methods Of Motivation:

Overview

Two workers do the same job for the same pay, yet one is energetic and careful while the other is slow and careless. The difference is motivation, the desire to work hard and do the job well, and it is one of the most powerful, and most tested, ideas in business.

In this lesson you will learn the financial rewards a business can use, wages, salaries, bonuses, commission and profit sharing, and the non-financial methods such as job enrichment, job rotation, teamworking, training and promotion. You will use Maslow's hierarchy to understand why these work, and learn to recommend and justify the best method for a given situation.

Objectives

  1. Financial rewards, e.g. wage, salary, bonus, commission and profit sharing
  2. Non-financial methods, e.g. job enrichment, job rotation, teamworking, training, opportunities for promotion
  3. Recommend and justify appropriate method(s) of motivation in given circumstances

Lesson Note

Motivated workers produce more, make fewer mistakes, stay longer and give better customer service. Poorly motivated staff cost a business through low output, high labour turnover and absenteeism. Choosing the right way to motivate people is therefore one of a manager's most important jobs, and exam questions almost always ask you to recommend and justify a method for a specific business.
