Midpoint Of A Line Segment

Overview

The midpoint of a line segment is its exact center, the point that splits it into two equal halves. Finding it is one of the neatest little results in coordinate geometry: you simply average.

In this lesson you will find the midpoint of a line segment from the coordinates of its endpoints, by averaging the x-coordinates and averaging the y-coordinates. It is quick, reliable and used throughout geometry.

Objectives

  1. Find the midpoint and the length of a line segment from the coordinates of its endpoints.

Lesson Note

Midpoints turn up when you find centers, bisect segments and locate the middle of a shape. The averaging rule makes a geometric idea into a one-line calculation.
