Factors Of Production

Overview

Every product you buy and every service you use started with four basic ingredients: land, labour, capital, and enterprise. These four factors of production are the building blocks of every economy, and understanding how they combine is essential to explaining why some businesses thrive while others struggle.

In this lesson you will explore what each factor contributes, how specialisation and division of labour raise productivity, and why some businesses rely heavily on machinery while others depend on people. You will also examine how the balance between these factors is shifting as technology transforms the way goods and services are produced.

Objectives

  1. Understand changing relationships between enterprise, capital, land, and labour, and the difference between capital-intensive and labour-intensive activities

Lesson Note

Imagine opening a bakery. You need premises and flour (land and raw materials), bakers and cashiers (labour), ovens and delivery vans (capital), and someone willing to risk their savings to make it all happen (enterprise). Remove any one of these and the bakery cannot function. Every business, from a street vendor to a multinational corporation, depends on the same four factors of production.
