Carboxylic Acids

Overview

Carboxylic acids are organic acids found in everything from vinegar to citrus fruits. They bridge the gap between organic chemistry and the acid-base reactions you studied earlier in the course, behaving in many ways like the mineral acids but with their own distinctive personality.

In this lesson you will learn the functional group and general formula for carboxylic acids, how to name and draw the first four members, and how they react with metals and metal carbonates. You will also discover that vinegar is simply dilute ethanoic acid, connecting everyday kitchen chemistry to formal organic chemistry.

Objectives

  1. know that carboxylic acids contain the functional group
  2. understand how to draw structural and displayed formulae for unbranched-chain carboxylic acids with up to four carbon atoms in the molecule, and name each compound
  3. describe the reactions of aqueous solutions of carboxylic acids with metals and metal carbonates
  4. know that vinegar is an aqueous solution containing ethanoic acid

Lesson Note

Squeeze a lemon and the sharp taste comes from citric acid. Leave wine uncorked and the sour tang is ethanoic acid. Ants sting with methanoic acid. These organic acids all share the same functional group, and the reactions they undergo will feel familiar if you have already studied the reactions of inorganic acids like hydrochloric acid.
