Circumference And Area Of A Circle

Overview

The circumference is the distance around a circle and the area is the surface it encloses, both governed by the constant \(\pi\). Extend these to a slice of the circle and you can find an arc length and the area of a sector.

In this lesson you will calculate the circumference and area of a circle, and the arc length and area of a sector, by treating a sector as a simple fraction of the whole circle.

Objectives

  1. Calculate the circumference and area of a circle, and the arc length and area of a sector.

Lesson Note

Circular shapes are everywhere, from wheels to pizzas to clock faces. Knowing the circle formulas, and how a sector is just a fraction of the whole, handles a large slice of measurement problems.
